From The Beatles favourite newspaper "The Daily Mail", 12th July 2000

Headline : "Paul's Fab Favourites"
---------------------------------
Sir Paul McCartney has revealed his personal hit parade ...

A full article will appear in this month's top U.K. music magazine, "MOJO", which arrives at a list of the top 100 songs ever written. A panel of the top songwriters, including Paul (natch), Hal David, Jerry Leiber, Carole King, and Brian Wilson, had to pick their top 10 written songs. The data has been collated into a Top 100 which will appear in the next issue (usually due about the 14th of the month).

Paul's top ten (immodestly ?) included four Beatle compositions :

  • Help !
  • A Day In The Life
  • Here, There and Everywhere
  • Something
His other six were, "Stardust", "Unforgettable", "Cheek to Cheek", "When I Fall In Love", "God Only Knows" and "Jailhouse Rock".

Sir Paul says his writing partnership with John Lennon hit it's stride in 1963 when they were writing From Me To You on a bus from York to Shrewsbury.
"Something happened in the middle, when we go into the bit that starts, 'I've got arms that long to hold you', that change made me think, 'Ooh God, we're getting all right here.' I felt something was starting to happen."

The final chart of the top 100 songs ever written, is topped by .....
    . . . . .
"In My Life" by Lennon and McCartney.
    with further Beatle compositions in the Top 50 appearing at No's: 4, 11, 14, 19, 29, and 43.
The Daily Mail prints the top 50, and Incredibly, "Strawberry Fields" is NOT amongst them !!

All of the Beatle songs listed could be described as "ballads", which (in my opinion !), perhaps means the contributors have perhaps mellowed a bit with age ?

This news site will give more information when "MOJO" hits the newstands later this week !
