Comments: Red Rose Speedway was credited to Paul McCartney & Wings and it carried a long gestation period.
Recording began in Los Angeles in March, 1972 where they worked on “Big Barn Bed”, “My Love”, “One More Kiss”, “Single Pigeon”, “When The Night”, “Loup” and the closing medley. At this time, “Little Lamb Dragonfly,” which was begun during the sessions for Ram, was also completed.
Other songs from these sessions include the unreleased (at the time) “Mama’s Little Girl”, ”The Mess”, ”Tragedy”, ”Night Out”, “Jazz Street,” and “Best Friend”.
After a tour of Europe, in the summer more sessions commenced at Olympic Studio in London with final mixing at Abbey Road in October.

This impressive looking longbox set gathers together a lot (but not all) of the relevant alternate takes and outtakes from this era.

Four c.d.'s plus a 12 page long booklet with each box set individually numbered as being part of a limited edition of 500.

The Live in Newcastle set is from a soundboard acetate and documents Wings final show of their first advertised tour in 1973.
Well worth hearing this concert for the rare live versions of When The Night, Seaside Woman and Big Barn Bed which were dropped from the live set in subsequent tours. One of the highlights of the set is Maybe I'm Amazed which is played faster than normal as opposed to Live And Let Die which seems slower and lighter and is a far cry from the rock-explosion extravaganzas of the later tours.
An enjoyable listen with some amusing intros and one of the best examples of the Wings live early years.

For the Hammersmith Odeon show, Wings played three nights of which two nights have appeared as audience recordings on disc, 26th and 27th May.
The performance of the 27th heard here is considered the better of the two available.

In The Studio: Alternate Red Rose Speedway - The Double Album.
(An assembly of the proposed 2 L.P. set for release December 1972)

Note: This is only guess work as only Paul knows what really should have been included (or maybe he didn't).
1 Country Dreamer Original single version (B-side of Helen Wheels)
Later included as a bonus track on the 1993 re-mastered Band On The Run.
3:06
2 Night Out Rough Mix
“Night Out” was recorded in March 1972 and was omitted from Red Rose Speedway.
It was remixed in 1978 and 1980 to be part of the Cold Cuts project.
There are several remixes in existence (see Lifeworks Vol.2), this is an initial rough edit.
2:12
3 One More Kiss "New" remastered version 2:27
4 Jazz Street Long version (unreleased)
“Jazz Street” exists in this unedited form plus an edited form lasting about five minutes.
It is the same instrumental except for the difference in length.
An interesting exercise with great riffs from Henry McCullough, but it ultimately goes nowhere.
8:03
5 Big Barn Bed Rough Mix
This mix has the vocals louder.
There is also a faint shout from Paul during the opening guitar riff,
and the “da da dewey” scats are not present.
3:48
6 My Love Original mono mix 4:06
7 When The Night Rough Mix
Almost the same as the commercial version except with a false start and
it is ten seconds longer at the fade out in the end.
3:46
8 Single Pigeon Rough Mix
Brief piano tinker before song starts
1:57
9 Tragedy Original First Mix
“Tragedy” is another outtake that was remixed for the unreleased Cold Cuts collection.
3:16
10 Mama's Little Girl Rough Mix
Unreleased studio version (eventually released in 1990)
3:42
11 Loup (1st Indian On The Moon)   Rough Mix
Starts with Paul counting in.
4:18
12 I Would Only Smile Rough Mix
A Denny Laine composition which was originally unreleased, but appeared a decade later
on his first post-Wings solo album Japanese Tears.
This is the same as the final version except it is several seconds longer at the end
3:20
13 I Lie Around Original single version (B-side of Live And Let Die)
Sung by Denny Laine, it later appeared on the 1993 remaster of Red Rose Speedway
